Tribute to John by Malcolm “Neddy” Long
There are not many people the mention of whose name engenders an instant sense of fun, good times and laughter – John was one of these rare people.
I first met him at a scout meeting at King’s School where he was Group Leader. Within seconds of his entry, John had that room of people going – energised and laughing! His wide grin, his enthusiasm… the whole man was a bundle of energy; as a teenager, I had seen nothing like before in my life.
As part of Gang Show, John found a natural home…camped at the keyboard, bashing out the tune and accompaniment, giving his great friend Trevor Benns the wind up, being cheeky and enthusiastic, a tornado of encouragement and, when required, a serious demander of standards and attention. John was a true servant of the show…always ready to do more than could be reasonably expected of him to make the show better. He could laugh at himself, was truly humble of his musical talent, was always the centre of quiet mischief as well as serious counsel.
He was also an extra-ordinarily kind person who never hesitated to say a positive word of encouragement often quietly behind-the-scenes.
For me, John Hargreaves embodied all that is great about Gang Show; fellowship, hard work and laughter. His name will always mean these things to me.
